Sunchaser Challenge – New Races, 4 Locations

This is the first year for the Sunchaser Challenge.   The Sunchaser Challenge – a new kind of adventure for every level of ability to help protect wildlife under threat of extinction.  As a relay team or with a solo effort, Run, Bike, Kayak and Navigate your way through stunning scenery. You have until sunset to find the 50 checkpoints scattered throughout the course and ‘rescue’ the endangered species. There will be between 7-10 discipline loops, ranging from 1 – 3 hours in duration and will encompass optional routes ranging from easy to challenging. You don’t have to be a super athlete just super enthusiastic!  There are 4 races to choose and will all start simultaneously.


Race Date/Time:  Saturday May 22nd, 9AM for all races

Check in/Packet Pick Up: Friday 21st May 5pm – 7pm (we recommend you check in the night before if possible)

Lake Tahoe – Northstar at Tahoe Resort, Truckee

Lake Havasu – Nautical Beach Front Resort

Lake Geneva – Grand Geneva Resort

Saranac Lake  - Paul Smiths College

Last minute check in/packet pick up: Saturday 22nd May 7am – 8:45am

There will also be the Sunchaser 10k Trail Run

The race director, Nick Gracie is a member of the current World Adventure Team Champions and has been directing races for five years.  The race management team includes experienced athletes.                       

What makes the race memorable for athletes?  The format is unique involving the “rescue” of animals linking orienteering and other disciplines to the endangered species theme.

There is no formal pre/post race dinner.  

Where do most of the athlete’s come from for the race (what states)?  Within two hundred mile radius of each of the four locations.

Is there an airport close to the venue? Reno, Nevada Airport and San Francisco International Airport.

Is there anything in the area to keep the kids busy during the race or do I want to leave them home ?  There will be a kids Mini-Sunchaser Challenge to keep them occupied!

In terms of logistics is the race a point to point or does the race start and finish in the same area?  The race will start and finish in the same area.

Are there an abundance of bathroom facilities or porto-potties at the start/finish and out on the course? Yes, many locations.

Are there any specific training idea’s to prepare the athlete for the race, based on the specific course terrain?  Check out the “Get Ready” section on the website for tips and advice.

Any traffic issues to be concerned about on the course – no, any issues will be addressed ahead of the races. 

Any advice for a first timer – Enjoy and make it as tough as you feel you are able to do - the race is for all levels of ability.

There will be medical support available at the events.

Is the course clearly marked, what is used?  Yes there will be abundant signs throughout the routes.

Is there a race expo?  Yes there will be a small race expo.

Race entry Fee   $125 (also a 10k run for $35)

Hotel   -  Special deals offered at all locations $40-$60 per night average  

How many dinners/ meals to buy  2 dinners + breakfasts

Transportation flight cost or gas  – Depends form traveling location, however there are special weekend package deals 

There are grocery stores close by the various hotels and race start.  Most are within walking distance.  Water and coffee will be available at the start.

Other items of interest – there  is limited cell phone coverage in the area and cannot be guaranteed.   The will be a race photographer on the course so you can have some pictures for long-term memories.

Why should an athlete consider this race?  The Sunchaser Challenge is a unique, new and fun race to support a great cause.  It provides a challenge for all abilities.
