Race Review by Carina Guerreiro

The Lisboa International Triathlon is a Half Ironman Distance event located in the hart of Lisbon, Portugal. The event is one of the first in European calendar and it has been “blessed” since year one (5 years running, going on six), with amazing weather conditions, around 25 ºc and around 18 to 19ºc water temperature. The fact of being located in the South of Europe helps with the weather for sure. The event website is www.lisboatriathlon.com.

The event takes place on a Saturday (April 29th in 2011) and starts at 8 AM. The check-in starts at 5h30 AM and closes at 7h30 AM of race day. The race fee is 160€. The participants receive a finisher t-shirt, a finisher medal, age-group medals down to 3rd place, cash prizes for the first 5 Male and Female, cash prize for the best swim, best bike, and best run splits. In addition, all athletes receive two tickets to the awards party at the Lisboa Casino. Plus fuel stations for the end of swim, bike course, run course, finish line and massages.

The Lisboa Triathlon is a unique event from several perspectives. It takes place in the hart of a major European Capital, the weather conditions in the Spring are just superb in Portugal, the race is in a 100% closed circuit with a two lap swim, four lap bike and run course, this format allows for friends and family to watch the competitors go by several times and take as many pictures as they want. In addition, the event is almost 100% flat, making it the perfect event to start off the long distance season as well as testing yourself and getting ready for a full distance event later in the season. Last but not least, on the Sunday after the Triathlon the organization hosts the King and Queen of the Sea Open Water swim that takes place on the same venue as the Triathlon swim. This event is the European qualifier event to the world finals in Rio de Janeiro Brazil. There is a wetsuit division and if you are not a winner you always have a chance at winning a raffle ticket with free flight, hotel and participation in the Rio event. Can beat that!!

The race has been sold out since year one and has doubled in participation almost every year.  The majority of athletes come form Spain, United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy.  The race venue is just 5 minutes from the Lisboa International Airport that has low cost flights flying in from most countries. The host hotel and race venue are literally 2 minutes apart, if you are high enough in your room you can see the start and finish, also, the venue offers a big number of hotel options do to the proximity to the airport, in fact, this is the location with the most hotels nearby in Lisboa. There is a pre-event Pasta Party dinner and a race expo at the host hotel.

The venue has a major mall with entertainment for kids. The course is 100% closed to traffic, including the bike course that takes place on a 3 lane freeway.  It’s the best bike course in Europe, maybe the world…  The course is clearly marked, it’s impossible to miss, we have 3000 road barriers!!

Aid stations: Bike course one every 22.5 k, run, one every 2.5 k, swim on exit. Gatorade, water, pepsi, bananas, oranges, gel, bars (ZIP VIT), at the finish, all that plus, melons, grapes, cakes, etc.
