Inflammation is a complex biological response to harmful stimuli. It activates the immune and vascular response in order to help remove the injurious stimuli and initiate the healing process. You can experience the 5 classic signs of acute inflammation when you have an injury like sprain or bruise. They are pain, swelling and redness, the heat (sometimes fever), and some amount of loss of function. The whole process – inflammation and dismiss of the inflammation – is well regulated by several factors called inflammatory cytokines. Some cytokines are responsible for the start and sustenance of the inflammation and others are responsible for the depression and elimination of the inflammation once it has filled its role.

When there are no harmful stimuli available in the body, suppression of the inflammatory processes is the dominant. It is possible that the body is exposed to constant but weak inflammatory stimuli, which can cause an elevation on the level of inflammatory cytokines. This causes a chronic, persisted low level inflammation in the body. This chronic low level inflammation can be associated with several diseases and chronic conditions like atherosclerosis, acne, rheumatoid arthritis and several other autoimmun diseases. It can also be associated with allergies, asthma and several types of cancer. There is in also creasing evidence that chronic low level inflammation can play a role in mental disorders, like depression and in cardiovascular diseases.

Several components of western lifestyle can improve the level of inflammatory cytokines and lead to this dangerous low level of inflammation.

In the next blogs I would like to discuss lifestyle factors like nutrition, physical activity, stress etc in the respect that it may enhance or weaken inflammatory processes.
