Grand Columbian Triathlon Resurrected – Iron Distance Race

The news is the Grand Columbian Triathlon has new owners and they are race directors Stefan and Melissa Newberry of TriFREAKS.

“TriFREAKS is excited to take over the Grand Columbian Triathlon, and we can’t thank Total Health Events enough to consider us to continue on the tradition of holding this great event. The Grand Columbian Triathlon has been one of America’s premier endurance race courses. Seven years of Championship Status including the ITU Pan American Long Course Championship. We are both honored and excited to carry on the tradition of the Grand Columbian Triathlon and look forward to making sure everyone continues to have the great experiences they have had, as well as add new ones!”

The Grand Columbian Triathlon started in 2004 in Washington state in the Grand Coulee Dam area, some 90 miles west of Spokane with two race, an Iron Distance triathlon and a Half Iron race. After the 2008 running of the event the previous owners retired the Iron Distance event. Since then the Grand Columbian Triathlon has consisted of the original Half Iron distance race, an Aquabike event and an Olympic Distance race.

Now with the new ownership comes news that Grand Columbian Triathlon Iron Distance event will be resurrected along with a new Super Triathlon race. In 2011, the Grand Columbian Super Triathlon will take place on September 17th and will be bringing back the Ultra Distance (Iron) triathlon as well as adding a new Super Triathlon. The course will be both challenging and fantastically rewarding, and will most definitely earn you bragging rights!
The new Super Triathlon challenge will consist of the following a 5km Swim, 200km Bike and a 50km Run. The Iron (Ultra) Distance Triathlon will feature the standard distances of 3.8km Swim, 180km Bike and a 42.2km Run. See the website for all the other event distances.

As stated on the TriFREAK website: “The courses will be amazing and we will offer all of you some great swag, post race food, trophies and a carb loading dinners. We’ll also be working hard with the community to have an after event festival with a live band, food, beer and wine and hopefully a lot more.”

Organizers are looking forward to utilizing the new race to help the local community for their fundraising project to build a new school for the Grand Coulee Dam School District. You can find out more info on this project at
